Apeiron
ἄπειρον — ancient Greek: the boundless, the indefinite, the origin from which all things emerge. In Anaximander's cosmology, the source underlying every formed thing. The name for an instrument with no fixed timbre, no inherited form — only the mathematics of becoming.
Apeiron is the working title for our first instrument - a synthesizer that uses a flexible chain of generation and processing modules and unabashedly lives in the digital domain. The project strives to create create an expressive instrument enabling gesture-controlled generation of sounds and textures never heard before. Follow along our development journey on the Writings page and subscribe to our newsletter for updates from the lab.
Most digital synthesizers simulate the past. Apeiron begins elsewhere — in the mathematics of dynamical systems, spectral geometry, and the frequency domain.
Sound here is not waveform. It is a time-evolving structure in complex spectral space, shaped by chaotic attractors, cellular automata, and transforms with no analog equivalent. The boundless, as source.
No frequency. No noise. Updates when there is something to say.
